Patriarchy in Spain has always been strong especially when Spain wanted to keep the colonies to herself while preventing the natives (indigenous and mixed heritage ethnicity (mestizaje) from seeking control of their destiny but it hits homes when their own brethren from Catalunya want to break away from that level and type of control.

Bad enough that Gibraltar has been British for some time with most of colonies being taken away and the Inde[pendences movements gaining their own strength from the middle of the 19th century.

Really, I do not see any advantage for locals in paying taxes for Catalonian Government, not Spanish ,
However, there is always a party which make profit from it.
So far, couple of the serious investors moved away their Catalonian`s businesses ,
it is no good for the regional economy.
