Richard Linklater's latest film: Last Flag Flying

Author Daryl Poniscan had two good films from his novels in 1973, Cinderella Liberty, starring James Caan, and The Last Detail, starring Jack Nicholson. The late Hal Ashby directed The Last Detail in what I think was one of Nicholson's best films, a very realistic road movie about three guys in the Navy. It had great dialog, interesting and diverse characters, each with a very distinct voice, and they moved things along in a road film with constantly changing scenery and situations in which to examine the characters, who were well-defined and consistent. Both Poniscan stories ended in bittersweet irony, not dripping in happy-dappy Hollywood treacle.

Several years ago there was talk of re-uniting the cast of The Last Detail for a film based on Poniscan's 2005 novel Last Flag Flying that re-visited those same sailors after one of their sons died 30 years later in post 9/11 Iraq. A project featuring original cast members Nicholson, Randy Quaid and Otis Young (passed in 2001) didn't pan out, but Richard Linklater has now teamed with Poniscan to adapt that novel into a feature film starring Laurence Fishburne, Steve Carrell and Bryan Cranston.

Considering the much more successful of Poniscan's stories was adapted by someone else into a film, I'm optimistic about this release since he's co-writing with Linklater, a very talented writer, especially in dialog heavy films that scrutinize well-developed characters.
