Make sure it's the proper length, and the fastest way to learn is to do it barefoot! :D

That's one skill I could never master, although I would love to.

Any preferences on ropes? I have a crappy vinyl one. Don't like it because it's bent out of shape. Thinking I'll just get an old fashioned beaded one like everyone probably used as a kid. There are a ton of super expensive ones with ball bearings etc.

10-4 on the lava pit; I'll wait til I've achieved true internal jump rope skills.

Make sure it is the right length and avoid the weighted ones. As a beginner the weighted ropes not only build bad habits but will burn you out really quickly.

Here is a short list of some decent ropes. Personally, I’d go with an easily adjustable one until you are really comfortable.

This can be harder on the knees and ankles than most people realize, so keep it to three sessions a week in the beginning.

Honestly, I always bought the cheap $5 everlast ropes. They wear after a while, but usually worth the price. I prefer speed ropes to weighted ropes.

my recommendation :
old guitar cable mounted in the handles,
always in proper shape, and never wear out :)

I got the old fashioned schoolkid beaded kind. literally a string (you could replace it with kitchen string) inside plastic tubes. so much easier for a beginner to use, and seems pretty effective. I haven't even worked up to 1 minute yet. A few old tweaked spots immediately complained, but now they seem to be acclimating to the stress. If I could get to 3 minutes, I'd be happy haha. 10 minutes seems absurd at the moment.

i have used both those everlast leather ones (nice but as faxing mentioned the leather snaps at the handle after a while, Everlast is just a name ;) ) and also plastic ones, not sure what became of the last plastic one but I was happy with it.

If you wear out your rope, you're doing fine. Buy another.
Edit *Oh, first tip; it's skipping, not jumping. "Jump rope" is something different. :) Watch the heads of the best skippers.

It's amazing how effortless it seems. I can pretty much only skip (jog/skip pattern with two bounces per swing). Bouncing is more difficult for me; not sure why; rope might be a bit long.
