Nothing really new here!
They are just making it state policy based on observational and social cues already exhibited by its many citizens. USA, despite its "democratic republic" sensibilities engages in a far more nefarious schemes so why are we so shocked! Indigenous people in USA have been relegated to reservations and no one is blinking an eye and it is seen as the status quo for them and for those who legalized the policies and then the onlookers declare..Well , they deserve it since thay are all drunkards, they beat their wives, etc.... State policy in USA before the 1960' relegated it s'darker citizens' to designated and separate facilites and few people spoke up. As a matter of fact, they saw it as a "norm'....

Why would mainland China be any different?

China is different in that it’s a federally sponsored (not private company) social credit score based on a range of behaviors (e.g., penalized for jay walking, inappropriate tweeting, smoking where prohibited, etc.). China has about 176 million surveillance cameras that can watch their citizens. They're planning 600 million cameras by 2020.

There is a longer list of penalties for low social credit scores, including being banned from buying airline and train tickets, high speed internet, children’s private school, buying property, and buying cars.

You can do community service and buy China made products to raise your social credit score.

on a tangent, not nearly the same thing as it's only one company, but you made me think of this topic.

There were some stories about Amazon firing some of its customers unexpectedly based on algorithms scoring you as a "bad" customer because you returned items too many times or something that could be fairly innocent. one person said it's very hard not to have access to Amazon. Amazon is 44% of all US e-commerce. To become a customer again, you have to apply with Bezos or something.

China Uncensored has a good overview of the program. Basically, all the info. is created by the federal govt and used by many different financial entities and local govts to create scores and enforce restrictions.
