radio taiso, one of many things okinawans do differently, it seems.

Diet, healthy relationships and a positive attitude are all factors that contribute to longevity, but the elixir for a long and happy life isn’t complete without physical activity.

It turns out that there is some value in learning more about how the longest-living people in the world move their bodies each day, which is exactly what Héctor García and Francesc Miralles did.

The authors of “Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life,” spoke to over 100 of the oldest people in Okinawa, Japan, a blue zone with the highest concentration of centenarians in the world.

García and Miralles got a sense of Okinawan centenarians’ daily behaviors, including how they moved their bodies. “You don’t need to go to the gym for an hour every day or run marathons,” wrote García and Miralles.

“As Japanese centenarians show us, all you need is to add movement to your day.”

The 5-minute exercise the longest-living people in Japan do every single day: Radio taiso
Nearly everyone that García and Miralles interviewed said they practice radio taiso, a popular Japanese exercise that has been around for decades.

not exactly anything impressive to an ima crowd here, but hey, maybe "normies" should do this...

Okinawans have a long history of being long lived but the current variable of Taiso exercise routine is only 1 of many variables.

When I was there 45+ years ago, this 'routine' wasn't a thing but OKinawans are vibrant, active and produce their own food (for the most part)
and all of it is natural (from the environment). ALot of fish, locally grown vegetables, and various activities that keep them observant, focused
and happy, and this in turn allows for brain (neural plasticity) function to be optimal.

Even the modern definition of welllness encompasses the following domains:
1. Social
2. Psychological
3. Emotional
4. Sexual
5.Occupational
6. Intellectual

Pretty sure manual Labour and lifestyle had a lot to do with it
I have seen docos where they say the younger generation with a more junk diet does not have the same health
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

it'd be interesting to know if in 80 years, the pattern is gone, lol. but it's likely not just manual labor since okinawans have 40% more centenarians than other japanese of the same generation and 3x USA of that generation, and presumably all those centenarians did more manual labor than current young people do. probably all the factors mentioned plus genetics as well. good genetics, nice island lifestyle/culture/environment, healthier food at lower amounts ("calorie restriction") for some reason, lots of other people your own age (even at 90, it's probably great to have the peer group rather than everyone in your peer group dying), gentle exercises...

A lot of ppl in Japan do Radio Taisou in the morning though, so that may not be a main driver (though average national life expectancy there is good compared to most of the developed world also)

What you are saying is positive though the concepts practiced per their descriptions mean nothing 'to non Western cultures!

As an example, "manual labour' seen from indigenous roots are just basics needed to grow food, reap the fields, plant atc so the label does not exist though through western eyes, it is called as such.
Same with caloric restriction since in order to hunt, anyone who fits the descriptionas fat, is a detriment to the hunt in tropical climes whereas in Northern Hemispheres amongst indigenous peoples
greater body fat is protective against cold climate. In such cultures, eating only what you need is part of the cultural milieu (social) and evn in TCM it is said to eat to 80% capacity as opposed to filling your stomach.

Additionally advetising/marketing is a stimulant that acknowledges the visual stimulate the mind/body/stomach to eat more food than usual thereby muffling a natural instinct to realize that an age old expression
of 'being greedy by ones' eyes is at work hence the admonition. I recently saw a comaprison ad showing how families having similar offspring can show external representation of life based on how the child is raised.
Genetics are important but habits have the pontential to influence genetics! The ad involved Arnold Schwartenegger with his son surnamed Baena (by the houskeeper) and a son raised by Maria Shriver and there was a big difference
when the comparised is observed.

i mention caloric restriction b/c it's observed the Okinawans eat less. But whether that's just because they observed the centenarians, who understandably eat less now than they probably did when younger, or if it's in general across the entire population, I'm not really sure. Also, in various animal studies, caloric restriction leads to longer lived animals (mechanisms seem to be unknown).

Personally I don't want to follow caloric restriction (although intermittent fasting is said to mimic some of the same mechanisms ... well, I still don't really want to do that, either). But it seems pretty easy to add a few items (vegetables, omega-3 foods, gentle exercise routine, some other supplements), even if subtract (red meat, bad air, bad water, bad stress, processed foods, too much alcohol, smoking, etc.) can be challenging. IDK, IMA people here probably do a lot more gentle exercise than in this routine, I'd guess.
