Cost to visit China/taiwan

Postby DeusTrismegistus on Mon Jan 05, 2009 2:23 pm

I am thinking about trying to visit taiwan and or china for awhile and I was wondering if anyone could let me know how much money it would take to stay in each country for around a month. That way I can start saving.

flights from Vancouver are $1400 CAD to Hongkong, $800 - 1300 CAD Beijing. Flights within China run about $100 CAD from Province to Province.
Hotels in off-season (no local manufacturing conventions) are about $30 CAD/ night in smaller but still decent hotels.
food is about 30 cents to $3 a meal. Beer is 30 cents for local beer in a mom/pop restaurant (good beer!) or $5 for import beer.
massage is about $3 - $11 CAD for 60 - 90 minutes depending on whether you go to big extravaganza places or smaller roadside places.

That depends on how comfortable you want to be for a month. If I were you, I'd look up the hotel/hostel you want to stay in and calculate from there. That will be your major expense. Everything else will depend on you. Good food in Taipei can be had for US$3 per meal, cheaper if you know where to go and/or speak/read Chinese. Transportation is negligible.

If you're serious, Lonely Planet guides are worth buying.

Do they have a website?

I am already planning on visiting a friend in Japan this summer so I figured I might as well go visit taiwan and/or china as well. It depends on the cost and if I can save enough money though.

Googling "hostel taipei" will get you a lot to look at. There are many now. Much more than when I first came. I stayed in Taipei hostel when I first got here:

They're a good place to start. I highly recommend the single rooms and buying a mosquito killer at a local store, though.
