competitions in the traditional karate sphere, while it is inter style tournaments it has its set point and scoring system which can vary more or less from the dofferent styles own point and scoring rules. So in the heat of the beat one might make mistake.
Anyway in the traditional point tournament, some competitors go in for a full on strike or kick just to shake up and hope to intimidate their opponent, nothing anyone gott banned for back in the days.

The very first tournaments in sweden attracted Karatekas with anything from months to just a week or so training, boxers, wrestlers, hoodlums, ruffians.....
Those today oldtimers who were around back then recall the ambulance went shuttle between the tournament venue and hospital.

Another experience from my time in Karate. While at the hombu dojo（headquarter）of JKA in Tokyo, any foreigner visting for the first time for training could expect a quite rough treatment during kumite training.
Remember an american guy who basically came on the dojo floor got knocked down and out, was left laying on the floor for some minutes eventually dragged himself up and stappled back to the locker room changed and left.
