The expansion of the universe could be a mirage, a potentially controversial new study suggests. This rethinking of the cosmos also suggests solutions for the puzzles of dark energy and dark matter, which scientists believe account for around 95% of the universe's total energy and matter but remain shrouded in mystery.

The novel new approach is detailed in a paper published June 2 in the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity, by University of Geneva professor of theoretical physics Lucas Lombriser.

Scientists know the universe is expanding because of redshift, the stretching of light's wavelength towards the redder end of the spectrum as the object emitting it moves away from us. Distant galaxies have a higher redshift than those nearer to us, suggesting those galaxies are moving ever further from Earth.

More recently, scientists have found evidence that the universe's expansion isn't fixed, but is actually accelerating faster and faster. This accelerating expansion is captured by a term known as the cosmological constant, or lambda.

The cosmological constant has been a headache for cosmologists because predictions of its value made by particle physics differ from actual observations by 120 orders of magnitude. The cosmological constant has therefore been described as "the worst prediction in the history of physics."

Actually, scientists have proven that the universe is "flat" which means that it probably has no end. From this POV, some scientists say that the universe is not expanding. Matter as galaxy clusters are moving further away from each other, but space itself might not be expanding.

It is. All physics and science is. "Black matter" was originally just something Einstein invented out of the blue to make his equation work. And the most important equation of quantum mechanics is based on an imaginary number. Neither quantum mechanics or energy engineering would be possible without those "imaginary numbers". And no one knows what those imaginary numbers really are.

You can only say that an equation adds up, or that something "works" or "doesn’t work". So most knowledge, regardless it's about stars or the Universe, or about really small things we can't see, is not direct, but indirect. Much of it is assumptions that make sense in its own system of thought, or in practical application, until someone comes up with a better explanation.

They don't mean the universe is flat like a piece of paper. It means that parallel lines remain parallel as far as can be observed. There could be a curve, but it's not visible.

Afa cosmic acceleration, the problem is that important calculations about the speed don't match. This could be because space doesn't expand equally everywhere. So, the overall shape of the universe doesn't have to be spherical at all. A shape like a horse saddle is one possibility, but ... maybe it's like the flat earthers view of the Earth.

You're right about the question of black holes. But, unfortunately, our current understanding of physics, nobody knows if 'space' is the same inside one. The question is, just like what is outside our universe, is whether we can understand it.
