Socialism and Secularism Suck Vitality Out of Society

I define internal martial art as unusual muscle recruitment and leave it at that. If my definition is incomplete, at least it is correct so far as it goes.

Provocative stuff! Does the gentleman in question really posit that America is the last bastion of artistic and literary excellence? No-one doubts America as an economic powerhouse, but what about German engineering? French cinema? British music?

And - Europe is socialist?

I would hold that great works of art often come out of personal struggle - look at the lives of the great composers - not out of religious conviction.

Frightening or amusing, I'm not sure which?

The guy probably can't name any Europeans, because he lives in his own narrow little world (like many religious conservative Americans). American scientists for example know and value their European collegues. It's just people like these guys, who don't know about these intelligent, innovative or artistic people. And btw, how many contemporary American personalities can you name of the same caliber as:
Douchebag "journalist" wrote:Brecht, Buber, Cezanne, Chekhov, Curie, Debussy, Eiffel, Einstein, Freud, Hesse, Kafka, Mahler, Mann, Marconi, Pasteur, Porsche, Proust, Somerset Maugham, Strauss, Stravinsky, Tolstoy, Zeppelin, Zola.

Not to mention the European immortals who lived within the century before them: Mozart, Beethoven, Dostoevsky, Darwin, Kierkegaard, Manet, Monet, Hugo and Van Gogh

?

It's also quite laughable to say that the church was a motor of innovation in history or at present. It's quite the opposite. One shouldn't confuse the wealth to pay for great art and music with progressiveness.

We've got Led Zeppelin, we live in a Kafka-esque society of paranoia, and Marconi stole from Tesla. Does that count? ;D

Ten days a year including sick days oughta be enough for anyone! In fact preferably we'd prefer for you not to take any at all during your first year as a sign of your dedication! The people from the US I meet overseas are so nice (no really) that I sometimes forget the clowns like Mr Prager who stay behind and probably don't even have passports :)

Thanks for posting this piece of blatant liberal baiting Klonk ;)

Even if one holds that religion is false, only a dogmatic and irrational secularist can deny that it was religion in the Western world that provided the impetus or backdrop for nearly all the uniquely great art, literature, economic and even scientific advances of the West.

I'm sure Galileo would disagree.

I agree with your essential point. But, I think that there's an obvious confusion between "religion" and the "Church." It's kind of ironic. Anyway, "religion" doesn't say anything unless we talk about what people in that religion say. The "Church" has a vested interest in maintaining power over and above whatever "religion" it represents.

It's easy to find scientists and philosophers who were/are religious or belong to an organized religion. But, those religions include all the churches, not just the churches of the west. And, imo, if any religion wants to take responsibility for "science", then they must take responsibility for wars, atomic bombs, gas-chambers and terrorist bombings.

in other words those filthy "communist" bastards DARE to be concerned with the quality of life of the common folk instead of maintaining the highest ideal of god and country (read top 1%) first. ::)

i love how the pro-fascist business elite label anything and everything that interferes with high double digit profit margins as "communist" or "socialist", which i suppose it is, but i'll take a healthy dose of socialism any day.

repeat after me children; "socialism is not a dirty word."

I always find it amusing when people bring up Galileo to prove anything. He was one person, one scientist. He does not represent the Catholic Church's long history of support of science.

Whatever we do, let's start by demonizing those who hold differing opinions than ours, and conveniently forget to address their objective points with actual debate and reason.

You buncha Liberal, Conservative, Socialist, Individualist, atheist, Bible-thumping, pot smoking, bleeding heart, gun toting, Eurotrash, American pig, elitist, low-brow, smug, mouth-breathing, intelligencia, hoity toity, bourgeois, proletariat, narrow-minded, multiculturalist, racist, fill-in-the-blank-ophobe, tax-and-spender, corporate toady, Dick Cheney/Barak Obama-lovin', Democratic Republican ugly bags of mostly water!

There....did I leave anybody out? If so, I'm sorry for not offending you. :P

Perhaps, but that doesn't change the fact that even to this day those who believe and preach evolution are still considered heretics by die-hard fundamentalists. And the author never mentions that in other countries with state sanctioned religion, openly expressing a view contrary to the orthodox one espoused by the church-state can get you executed. To conveniently ignore that while saying it's secularists who are "irrational and dogmatic" is dishonest and hypocritical IMO.
