Ed McMahon fighting foreclosure on his Beverly Hills home
June 4, 2008, 6:35 AM EST

BEVERYLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- Ed McMahon, who for decades appeared as Johnny Carson's sidekick on "The Tonight Show," is fighting to avoid foreclosure on his multimillion-dollar Beverly Hills home, according to published reports.

The former "Star Search" host was $644,000 behind on payments on $4.8 million in mortgage loans when a unit of Countrywide Financial Corp. filed a default notice Feb. 28 with the Los Angeles County Recorder's Office, The Wall Street Journal first reported late Tuesday.

McMahon, 85, has been a pitchman for the American Family Publishers' sweepstakes.

However, he has been unable to work as a pitchman for various products since he broke his neck 18 months ago, said his spokesman, Howard Bragman.

"There are plenty of people affected by the weak economy, bad housing market or bad health," Bragman said.

McMahon has been in "very fruitful discussions" with the lender to resolve the situation, Bragman said. But it's unclear whether McMahon and his wife, Pamela, will remain in the home.

Guess he'll have to settle for a single-million-dollar house instead.
Yesterday, I read a piece about the "working rich," who make huge amounts of money, but instead of investing it they choose to live lifestyles that spend the money as soon as they make it. It leaves them with no savings or investment interest that would sustain them should a catastrophe occur.

It is amazing to me that Mr. McMahon could have such a successful and well-paying career, but not be able to keep his home after not working for a year and a half. At his stage, he should have been able to work for the fun of it, not to maintain an extravagant lifestyle that fell away from under him and his wife after his accident.

I know he had a divorce or two that set him back huge amounts...just like Carson. But nonetheless, you think he might adjust his lifestyle accordingly. Also that house is close to Britney Spears' place...not a plus in the saleability department apparently since it's been on the market 2 years.

Its sad that a few million people in asia lost what little possessions they had and many will die of disease and starvation, its sad that many hard working Americans got suckered into buying houses they couldnt afford and will lose what little savings they have, but EM, sorry, he lived beyond his means, paid a lot of alimony and earnt a lot of money on minimum talent that he squandered. Is he in a flophouse-no, is he destitute-no, well tough shit Ed

I walked about 10 feet behind Ed McMhon as we were both going from Ceaser's to The Belaggio ...

... people's faces lighted up as they realized who it was, and he was very friednly and magnanimous to those who spoke to him and he even shook a few hands...

... on the foot bridge that leads to The Belaggio there was a homeless man sittting there with a sign, claiming he was a Vet, and that he needed money for food and Booze ...

... McMahon stopped and said something to the guy, ( I couldn't hear what ) and then he dropped a bill in the guy's hat ...

... it was a $50 dollar bill.

It's sad that we are still greedy.

It's sad that we are still lazy.

It's sad that we are still non-compassionate.

It's sad that we still hate.

It's sad that we stand divided against each other as a species.

It's sad that we war.

It's beautiful that we can change it all if we choose to do so.

:)

Ed will be ok. the people of Sichuan will recover and be ok.
the sadness, like happiness or like any emotional state is temporary and will pass.
There is nothing sad about that.
