Kettlebells in Taiwan

Postby Formosa Neijia on Sun Jul 26, 2009 3:04 am

Hi folks. I know some posters are from Taiwan and a few of you have been waiting for kettlebells to arrive. Well, they're here now:

If you need to learn how to use them, instruction is also available:

I've found that kettlebells make an excellent addition to martial arts and I feel that my power and body connections have grown even stronger since I've started training them. Things like the snatch make, for example, techniques like xingyi's snake much more powerful. There are tons of utility in training them for MA guys and the IKFF system that I teach uses many martial movements with the KB.

good luck in training,
Dave C.

Thanks, Ashe. BTW, if you ever get the chance to work with Steve Cotter, do it. He can show you so many things that will blow your mind. His skills in xingyi or with the KB are incredible.

What sorts of things did he do with xingyi that impressed you?

He is willing to work on IMA as well as kettlebells? Sounds great to me! Was this a private lesson or part of a seminar?

I thought the snatch tends to drain the power from your xingyi snake, esp after many repetitions. but your pi may get more powerful.

Keep in mind it was a kettlebell cert, not a MA seminar. So xingyi wasn't the point. But you could see it every time Steve moved.

One example, he used the hip bump from the kettlebell jerk to throw a guy straight up in the air. When I did it, it looked more like a hip bump used in judo for a hip throw. So he looked at me and said, "Think of it as a kua strike." Direct quote. I then got the technique.

I listened to him over the course of the cert and Steve was always making reference to his xingyi training when teaching the kettlebells. It's just part of who he is, I think.

We also learned their qigong set and practiced it about a dozen times. Steve's IKFF is doing some very cool things with IMA, bodyweight training, and kettlebells. They know that these things exist on a continuum and all have their place, they are not totally contradictory.

I like his system because I can intuitively understand it since he and I share similar backgrounds. I also teach my kettlebell classes with an eye towards martial power for those that are interested in it. Again, there are many, many similarities between the two.

If you're interested, you should come check it out.
