That first one looks like it would really be hard on the ankle and knee

the first one is typical of northern longfist styles.

no harder on the joints than squats or shoot the ducks etc.

stances develop strength.

no proper stance? you are weak, practice more, back to basics until you are strong. ;D

when your stance is strong, everything else will fall in behind.

Well sure stance is important and low stance is good, but look at his hip-knee-ankle alignment - freaking painful just to look at :o

Why do you think the alignment is wrong?

The skeletal structure is actually not incorrect.

The stance demonstrates the strength of the muscles and overall body. (refering to the very low dui ma demonstrated by first pic)

a maltese cross looks painful on the rings, but it is a demonstration of strength.

Darth, on that first one wouldn't it be better if the rear foot was pointing the same way as the thigh, which would mean the lower leg would also rotate and produce a single line into the ground?

thanks

Really? I'm not familiar with the posture but I'll take your word for it Darth. Maybe it's the camera angle and the silky silky jim jams but I've always been taught that the hip, knee and toe should be in alignment. To me looks like his right hip should either open outwards, or the right foot should move inwards. Even in low dragon stepping it's possible to keep that all in line. When I tried holding the posture in the picture the way he's doing it there was considerable torque on my knee. I opened up my hip so my hip, knee and toe were in line and it was fine. Perhaps it's just the angle - as long as he's comfy it's all good!

the jim jams and shoes, angle etc aren't showing the structure as it actually is.
we have an extended empty leg stance in our system of black tiger.
It is similar to this.

Darth, I think you're not quite getting what people are pointing out. There's nothing at all wrong with the cat stance when it's done correctly, but in that first pic the guy's knee alignment is seriously wrong. His right knee (the one bearing the weight) is collapsing inward, putting it in a weak position, overstretching the tendons on the inner side and compacting the cartilege on the outer side. He just needs to pull that knee outward so it points in the same direction as the toe of that same foot, instead of pointing off at a different angle.

When looked at from a frontal angle, hip, knee and foot should all be in the same vertical line.
