Postby Simon on Tue Aug 18, 2009 7:21 am

Hi Guys

This is completely Off the Topic, I have a friend who plans to go to Canada he did have it all sorted and place to stay etc but its all fallen through this is like a recon of Canada as its somewhere he would like stay longer term.

Just wondering if anyone has any contacts from good hostels they vary from ok to hellish, jobs for foreigners he is a British National perhaps teaching Englsish sounds bizzare but I saw an advert for HESS englsih advertising for Cancada.

Sorry if this sounds really random he just sent me a mail desperate for any help.

Thanks all.

Simon in sunny Taiwan.

what part of Canada is he interested in starting in?

I can give a rundown on a few things.

a) Canada is huge, you can easily fit 100 englands into a few of it's lakes. :)

b) east coast to west coast is roughly 5000 miles or 8000km

c) Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, are all the provinces east to west.

d) Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Yukon are all the northern territories east to west.

e)Biggest city = Toronto in province of Ontario (more than 2.5 million people in the proper area with about 10+million in and around teh city in various townships and smaller cities that are connected.

f) Montreal and Vancouver are multimillion inhabitant cities as well. Montreal is largest city in Quebec and Vancouver largest in B.C.

g)there are hostels in all major cities for travellers who want to do it on the cheap

h) major cities are:

Newfoundland- St.John
New Brunswick - Moncton, Saint Johns
Nova Scotia - Halifax
P.E.I- Charlottetown
Quebec- Montreal and Quebec city
Ontario - Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa
Manitoba - Winnipeg, Brandon
Saskatchewan - Regina & Saskatoon
Alberta - Calgary, Edmonton
B.C - Vancouver, Victoria
Nunavit - Iqaluit
NWT - Yellowknife
Yukon - Whitehorse

of course, all this can be known from wikipedia.
is he looking to bum a place to stay? I would suggest a hostel. they are cheap and clean and they won't interfere with anyone's routines. :)
Coconuts. Bananas. Mangos. Rice. Beans. Water. It's good.
