side note:

about teens texting images. I know a girl that had a photo of her baby niece on her phone - taken while baby was having a bath. Lots of parents/family have those pics. She was showing a friend her pic of her niece on her phone before class one day. Teacher overheard their conversation, went and complained to principal. Principal calls police - tells them she has child pronography on her phone. police rush over to the school arrest her, handcuff her and haul her away painfully in front of the whole class. the whole school hears she is arrested for child pornography. at the police station they strip her down and cavity search her. they have her lift her breasts and shake them upside down "because she might be hiding pornographic material in the folds beneath her tits". She has to bend over spread her ass cheeks, etc. all of this in an obvious attempt to humiliate her. they still haven't looked at her cell phone yet. finally they look at the phone, and see it's just a pic of her sister's baby taking her first bath - oops. the cops don't apologize. they give her her clothes back and place her on the front steps of the police station for her to find her own way back home. she never sued. I don't know why. she was pretty shaken up about it but it wasn't until much later that she was comfortable enough to even talk about it.

if it wasn't for the obvious fact that the powers that be like to have their own force of mindless thugs, i would say that it is high time that we as a civilized society officially recognize that certain types of people are attracted to the police force, and that far more rigorous screening and training of these people is necessary, as well as a system of extremely harsh punishment for them when they actively harm the people they are employed to protect.

Now it is important to understand that one should NEVER get out of his or her car when being stopped by the police. At the same time, I can understand how people make this big mistake. This sort of thing comes from us living in America and not yet understanding that when being stopped by the police, THEY are under the impression that you are actually under arrest through the entire time they have you stopped, regardless if the outcome results in being actually taken into custody. It's a distinction to understand. Unless you actually want to fight a cop, you have to play along by their rules and DO NOT try to assert your constitutional rights/individual rights/basic human rights/individuality/etc.

By saying so I am not taking away any of the blame where it is due--giving an attitude to a cop is a recipe for trouble. The thing people have to get is that cops are itching to get some action. They hire people who are of low level intelligence, not necessarily when it comes to general intelligence (although this is possible), but low level intelligence when it comes to making independent choices and independent thought, i.e., the ability to say in their mind, "hey, I'm technically allowed to tazer her now but that really isn't necessary".

People have to learn how to pick their battles. The main objective is to leave a traffic stop or whatever unscathed. The place to fight a ticket is in court, not on the side of the road. Lots of cops have anger issues, don't give them an excuse. The best thing to do is to remain respectful and firm in your answers and do what you need to do in order to be on your way.

A researcher...a PhD candidate we sometimes work with at my job was tasered and killed by cops in St. George Utah while he was having an epileptic event. He was of no danger to anyone...he was just running around a bit and was out of it from the seizure. I guess when you add a bunch of volts to an already over firing brain, it can kill you.
