The McClatchy report also suggests that Mr. Baron Cohen’s description of Mr. Abu Aita was misleading, noting:
Abu Aita is no terrorist on the run. He’s a 39-year-old father of four and a local political leader with the pro-Western Fatah Party. His Christian family owns two markets that sell groceries and alcohol in Beit Sahour, a small West Bank town next to Bethlehem.
Update | Friday Another reader writes to point out that in the film, this interview is described as taking place in Lebanon, not the West Bank, and adds that the actual leaders of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade do make themselves available to journalists for interviews — in fact, one of them spoke to an Israeli newspaper this week. Here’s the reader’s comment:
Even more misleading, “Bruno” says the supposed terrorist interview takes place in the Ein El-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon — there is even a map that shows him traveling there. The funny thing is that the real gun-toting leader of the Al-Aqsa Brigades in Bethlehem is easily available for interview if you know where to look — my husband interviewed him last week for PBS.
