Thai or Vietnamese Restaurants in Portland?

Postby Fu Mei on Sun Aug 30, 2009 12:38 pm

I have recently relocated to the Gorge area.

Any suggestions for some good "mom and pop type" Thai or Vietnamese restaurants or eateries in Portland or surrounding areas? (no chains please)

There's a place called VegeThai on SE Hawthorne, run by Buddhist nuns. Haven't been there myself.

If the buddhist nun place is the same one my moms brought stuff back from a couple of times, they do boss fried gluten.

For more a more standard kind of place I like Than Thao just up the street on Hawthorne. The food is good and cheap and plentiful.

I'm sure there are some amazing vietnamese places out on Sandy Blvd in the NE...there's a big viet population up there.

Thanks Shawn.

I am unsure of the geographical locations of the various communities. I will have to check out NE Sandy Blvd and see what I can find.

I did recently hit a place up in Vancouver that was so so, but it wasn't in a Vietnamese neighborhood.

I'll ask around. I'm super snobby about my thai food, though. I waited tables at a really good thai restaurant for about 4 years...so i'm pretty spoilt that way.

Shawn,

I got to where I frequented some excellent Viet and Thai restaurants in the DFW area. So having moved to a new location I am kind of having to "start all over." You know how it is.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

Back in 2002, I used to go to the Pepper Tree Thai Restaurant.

Michael,

Thanks for the suggestions. I will hit these places in the future when I make drives into Portland.

As for places that I frequented in DFW:

Bangkok City on Greenville in Dallas for Thai. For Vietnamese a small hole in the wall place in Richardson on a side street off of Plano rd north of the loop. Can't remember the name of the place or the street, but really good food.

The Basil Leaf in Irving is also good.

In Fort Worth it would be Thai Belknap Cuisine off of Belknap and Beach.

There are a couple of little Vietnamese places in Arlington which the names escape my mind right now but excellent food.

As a musician I worked all over the metroplex and had ample opportunity to sample a wide variety of places.

OK....this is kind of funny considering this thread.

In the past few days my mom has brought stuff back from a thai place called tuk tuk or tok tok?? out on Fremont in the NE. Way better than most of the Thai I've had here. Everything I've tried from them has been good.
