You live in Blacklanta but had to dig (that girl) up an old Englishman as the representative of Soul? Try some James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Staples Singers, Irma Thomas or Gil Scott-Heron. Or about 100 other African American singers who sing soul, blues, r & b, gospel and jazz with more soul than him. Or that other English gent Joe Cocker. Or Van Morrison. Or Michael McDonald if you want to advocate for white, ahem, soul.

I wasn't talking about it as a specific musical style; I was talking about putting his soul into his singing. You can sing opera with soul (or without).
