More from the master. Technical, yet he never loses sight of the beat. No beat = waste of time.

Horacio Hernandez. Completely different style. Watch how he plays a clave with his left foot the entire time... WTF :( :( :(

I sat in on a seminar session with Horacio at the local Long and McQuade. (Who throw workshops with the worlds greatest musicians on occasion and just up the street from my house, how fucking lucky am I? lol, you don't get to have an intimate 2 hours with Rik Emmet or Horacio Hernandez or Kim Mitchell or many otehrs on a regular basis. hee hee )

the dude is an insanely proficient drummer. Really fascinating stuff.

just as an aside, horacio was playing stuff and i couldn't even see what it was he was doing.
He has mastered full independence of rythyms and limbs.

seriously one of the most mind blowing drummer/percussionists I have had the pleasure of viewing and listening to up close and personal.

seriously freaky things were going on and I was like: is that his kick or his tom, the block or a stand? what the fuck is he hitting there, when did he make that? and so on. It was truly an experience.

anyway, thanks for pushing those memories to the front of my head!

An article on polyrhythms written by Steve Vai in the 80s
http://www.vai.com/LittleBlackDots/tempomental.html

Don't hurt yourself! lol

You might say, "Why, Steve?"
And I might say, "I don't know".
You might say, "Who's gonna play it, Steve?"
And I might say, "I don't know".
:D

Jealous! Are you a drummer yourself?

Now that you mention Steve Vai...Virgil Donati is a bit of a freak himself...

And this from a Steve Vai concert:

Flo Mounier is an amazing metal drummer. My problem with him is that I can understand everything he's playing. Also I'm not really into metal or rock solos that just end up featuring a lot of double bass.

Virgil Donati has a BIT of the same thing going on with his solos. I'm a lot more impressed by his Planet X stuff. Polyrhythms galore!

I totally agree. You know the Planet X piece "Interlude In Milan"? The Planet X outfit totally rips it up in that piece...never losing sight of the melody.

Thats something that I've loved about them from day one...once your figure out that the snare/cymbal accents are the only thing that is playing outside the 4/4 feel the dimensions of the music open up.
