How to Send Files Which Are Too Big for E-mail?

Postby cerebus on Mon Sep 28, 2009 5:16 pm

So... if I have some files (scans of books) that I'd like to send (sell as e-books), but the files are too big for e-mail attachments (even after using file-compression software), what else can be done to get the file to a buyer electronically? ???

Is there a free equivalent or just the pay version?

Last I checked, yousend it was free. I don't pay to use it. They have a paid for version with additional functionality, links that don't expire, unlimited downloads etc. The basic free service is enough to send a single copy of most anything though.

Another choice is megaupload.com. Links only expire if you take them down or of nobody accesses them for more than a certain period of time.

You could also look into FTP servers but they require a little more technical know how.

Cool, I'll look into it. I need something that I can use often on a regular basis.

Yeah, try btjunkie. Join, then upload your file, but "lock" it so that only people you allow can download it.

seriously, how big are these files?
get a gmail account - you can attach pretty big files to each message.
break down the scans into 2 or 3 parts
and email away.
not quite exactly in the service of the Crown

Well the files get as big as 85,000 KB and they are pdfs, so I don't know how I could break them down...

Most (all?) of that file compression software you were asking about on the other thread will let you split compressed files into parts of specified size.
Just FYI.

It's a minor inconvenience/annoyance but certainly an option if there's no other way.
But some of the websites mentioned look pretty promising (i.e. much less pain), so personally I would explore that option first, before I had to break 'em down.

Whichever way to go -- if the content is private, be sure to password-protect the files as you compress them before sending. The internets can't be trusted... :)

Troy:

Don't waste your time, go to file mail. You dont need to break down the files, compress them or any of that bollocks, just click 'file attach.' I have emailed a 400 page book (complete with visuals and maps). It's a piece of cake and its free.
