people who teach and think they are good

Hi

I have just come back from an interesting chat with a 70 yr old Silat master... he said for every 100 people teaching five will have skill, and 1 will be able to pass it on... am I the only one, sadly, the more I see of 'teachers' the more it seems to be true.

peace

I would say "sounds about right", but guess what... MOST people will think that THEIR teacher is that special one. Or at least one of those special five... ;)

So this isn't really saying anything at all, for all practical purposes.

(Funny how that works, eh... Those numbers seem so true, don't they. :-/ Wishful thinking + ego?)

I don't think that's true unless you believe in the "god" model where the teacher will pass on everything to one individual.

At my judo class, almost all my seniors have great tips for me for my specific problem in ground or standup practice. Same for bjj.

not quite what i meant.. only one teacher in a hundred has it, & the teaching to be able to pass it on.. they may well pass it to 1000 students.. when they become teachers 10 may have it and be able to pass it on...

well the Silat guy has it, but he's not my teacher (and I don;t know him that well) so I can't say if it's ego .. does it matter? :)

The teacher is the student, the student is the teacher.

Certainly sounds about right. See how many Mcdojo's there are out there? Then again, the more I think about it and see what's out there, I think the Silat master was generous in his estimation.

I think I see what you mean. Anderson Silva is one of the greats in mma. He might not be able to teach what he has. Same thing with Michael Jordan. He may be the best basketball player of all time but not sure he can actually coach or lead a team effectively as a non-player.

What is "it"? Are you saying for example, that out of 1000's of judo players, none of them are doing it correctly? Or are you saying that out of 1000's of judo players, only 1 or so truly excels.

I kind of suck at math but.....5 out of 100 should mean that out of 1000's of Judo players roughly 5% of them are doing it correctly. That's still "50's" of them.

10,000 hours of shitty practice will just end up with a very shitty practitioner. It must be good practice too.

If you do 2 hours per day, every day that would still take 13 and a half years. Then again who was it that said if you arent practicing 6 hours a day you are only a hobbyist and not a real martial artist? that would cut it down to about 5 years ;D
