(CNN) -- At least seven people are dead and between 12 and 15 wounded in shootings at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday, senior Pentagon official told CNN.

At least one person is "neutralized" in connection with the incident, and a second is "cornered," retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore told CNN, citing "unofficial, unconfirmed reports" from two sources.

Okay, so we have a Islamic psychiatrist/major in U.S army/graduate of Virgina Tech, who killed and injured tens of soldiers with just two handguns in the middle of the largest U.S. military base in the world. Can this get more crazy?

Absolutely. For example, he could be upset that his gay lover was discharged for gayness prior to the rescinding of the don't ask, don't tell policy. Or he could have accidentally discovered and inhaled some of the military's secret "berserker gas", designed to turn soldiers into rage filled remorseless killing machines. Or he could have been framed. The possibilities are limitless. Still I would agree that all graduates of Va. Tech should now be considered extremely dangerous, denied the right to bear firearms, and eventually rounded up and imprisoned.

"Islamic psychiatrist" is sort of silly, as if his psychiatry had anything to do with Islam. It'd be more appropriate to refer to him as a "Muslim psychiatrist."

They do and they don't: both deals with some of the same big questions: here it's the nature of the mind and reality, but their answers and approaches couldn't be more different. Therefore it's very hard to be both. For example, it's impossible to be a geologist and at the same time be someone who believes every word in the Christian bible is true, that earth is around 6,000 years old. On the other hand, a lot of devout people, because of their religious beliefs (be it Christian, Muslim, Buddhist...), think psychiatry is just a bunch of b.s, i.e. there is not such thing as mental illness, just people who "think wrong".

For most of us our religious beliefs is not in direct, fundamental conflict with our work, but scientists more than others really have to pick one over the other in their search for truth. And for the vast majority, they pick science. This is why while 90% of U.S population profess belief in a supreme being, only 7 percent of members of the American National Academy of Sciences, and 3.3 percent of UK’s Royal Society, believes in God.

This is not an anti-religious rant here: just pointing out in religion and science, truth, the definition of truth, the types of truth, the search for truth, and altitude toward truth are very different, often the opposite. It's very hard to be a very strong practicianer in both.

12 are dead.

The shooter is alive.

Agree on VA Tech. Usually when a mass killing like this happens, gun control advocates would say "if people didn't have such easy access to guns, it wouldn't have happened". And the other side would counter "if you outlaw guns, only the criminal would have guns", or "if we were all armed, it be a totally peaceful, polite society". Here all such arguments break down.

If the normal trends hold for mass shootings in the USA and Canada over the past 20 years, it eventually will be revealed that the suspect was under psychiatric care and was taking SSRI psychiatric medication like Prozac.

Oh, another irony: the person who stopped the massacre by shooting him was a woman, a civilian "first responder", most likely a police officer. But if she had applied for front-line duty in Iraq/Afghanistan she would've been turned down, because combat units are still man only.

Currently two of my cousins are stationed at Fort Hood. One of them is currently visiting family here in Ohio the other was on lockdown in the school right between the two main shooting sights. There were apparently 3 to 4 shooters total. One of my cousins was acquaintances with two of the dead/wounded. 12 people were killed and over 30 were injured. The shooters were a army reservist major and his family members who at least a couple were also reservists. They had recently returned from a trip to Jordan to visit family.

Don't forget Buddy, he was a MUSLIM shrink, shouting Allah is Great as he gunned down his fellow American soldiers. He was only wounded and will undoubtedly survive to become a martyr for his fellow muslim terrorists.

It doesn't matter what his religion was. Shit man, what do you call it when a christian goes berserk and kills people?
This is the kind of line that will only make matters worse.

Columbine killings were carried out by christian kids from christian families.

waco were christians on christians.

see where that takes you? It's bullshit.

The major had what is called a psychotic break. It had fuck all to do with religion.
