I am beginning to think

that RSF should adopt a strategy used by e-budo. That is, create a sub forum for the off topic, which is open by invite/request only, and hosts a) NSFW posts (so if you get offended easily, you don't go there) and b) NHB political discussions (so it doesn't annoy me). I mean so people can freely ramble on and since it's NHB, you enter at your own peril and further no one (mike strong for example) risks being banned for being a dick, despite having completely valid martial arts info as well.

I know that this is sort of what BTDT is used for now, but there is a bit of a difference. BTDT is for MA related bitchery. The Drinking Room, or whatever you want to call it, would be for straight BS. That would allow Mods to lay down some harder lines on sheningans in public, and simply say "Take it to the Drinking Room". Once in the drinking room, if someone bitches, well then GTFO of the drinking room. Simple?

Opinions?

Word up. All of those things fall under the umbrella of OT and/or BTDT.

We don't need no stinkin' subforums. ;)

That is the mature/experienced approach. Not everyone can handle that. As evidenced by a recent thread on the main forum. That being said, the idea I am proposing would not have prevented that particular episode, but would have limited damage from other events, such as the Sifu Z fiasco, etc.

As for BTDT, it became something other than what it was intended for, and is in my mind basically a failure.

i like that this is a small forum meaning only 5 places to put your topics. if people must act like assholes "verbally lash them with your superior linguistics skills"(tm) or just choose to ignore them. if a person can not handle being civil i do not think they should be rewarded with a place they are maybe encouraged to be assholes...

BTW, rather then thinking that you are rewarding people for being dicks, you might think of it as preventing people from being punished for their opinions. While I tend towards being socially liberal, you might note that most of the right wingers on this site have either been banned at one time or another, or left voluntarily. As much as I thought MikeC was a douche, his opinions were no more extremist than Darth R&R or Michael's financial conspiracy theories. But MikeC and Mike Strong are gone, and even Buddy has either mellowed or toned down his game.

actually several OTT threads have been sent to BTDT of late. and people are allowed to vent there. It is much less moderated. you're proposing basically a completely unmoderated zone. the problem with that is we don't want to be associated with porn, snuff, and any bullshit political discussions that may happen in a completely unmoderated zone.

This means, this unmoderated zone would have to be accessible only to forum members, or maybe even just great old ones. It is possible to create a forum uncrawled by the seach engine bots, and guests. what I don't want is some sort of elite club where forum members talk shit about other forum members that aren't cool enough. it would have to be accessible to all forum members.

that said, I doubt people will be mature enough to ignore crap flung in a DMZ. I think it will cause more harm than good. Let's say people start posting trolling posts about steffan yam, or political discussions get heated and never stop, spiraling out of control, and spilling over into the rest of the forum? I don't think it's a good idea. People can take that crap offline.

I am not suggested a law free zone. Intentional bitch trolling, ie the Yan threads, would still be off. Intentional attacks on other members (IE, MikeC is a fuckwad) would also be off. Political threads get heated no matter what and already spill over into the main forum, so that point is moot. What isolating them does is allow people who simply peruse the forum to not be offput by extremism or random porn postings. Results are a matter of execution.

As for the Yak's forum, there is an old term from the early days of computing. "Yak in, Yak out."

well, I kind of have it in mind that e-budo is where a lot of 15 year olds go to swear at each other with lots of 'lolz' and '3at sh1t b1ch3s' smattered in between...
