Epitafios” (Epitaphs), the hit Argentine miniseries in which everything is a mystery except the killer’s identity, returns to HBO Latino this Friday after a four-year break.

As in the first season, the cast is spearheaded by a group of veteran Argentine film and television actors who have been called a “dream team” by Argentina’s press.

This time around, the nameless assassin, a man who believes killing is an art form and who looks to copy famous murders — the more gruesome the better — will be played by Leonardo Sbaraglia, whose name often comes up when it’s time for sexiest-Latino-actors lists.

But the law-and-order side benefits from the supernatural help of XL, a mute corpse that has a way of revealing who’ll be the killer’s next target.

This detective squad has no bloodhounds, but it’s got something close enough: a detective who, by merely sniffing an object found at a crime scene, can tell what it’s made of. Provided that he’s not suffering from allergies.

And though the burned-out, cynical and fed-up gumshoe is common on TV police shows, “Epitafios” seeks to upgrade the cliché with Marina Segal, an investigator who likes to play Russian roulette.

As in the first season, Cecilia Roth, known for her roles in Pedro Almodóvar’s films, plays Segal while Julio Chávez returns as detective Renzo Márquez, the moody squad leader.

Aiming for a Hispanic-American audience, producers went for a generic sound, ditching the accent of the muy Argentine cast members. Gone is their “vos” in favor of the more common “tú.”

The 13-week first part aired on the Spanish-language channel HBO Latino starting in September 2005 and three months later was shown with English subtitles on HBO Signature, garnering good reviews from American critics. This time, the subtitled version will air the same week, premiering on HBO2 next Tuesday.

“Epitafios” was the first original production made in Latin America for HBO Latino and ushered in a new period for the network, which initially was mostly devoted to programs translated from English.

“I think that in the end, if the show is good everyone wants to see it,” said Lucinda Martínez-Desir, vice president of acquisition marketing at HBO. “It doesn’t have to be from your own culture.”

Haven't seen it yet, but I've heard great things. Anyway, I think that if you like Spanish detective-thrillers, you should see "Caja 507." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325145/
Check it out.
