Haven't read the whole thread but what I want to know is, since the catholics invented heaven (at least as it is modernly conceived) why can't they decide who gets in and who doesn't?

The best R.C. version of Heaven I ever heard was many years ago from a Farm Street Jesuit, who explained in his excellent sermon why only people with good manners would be allowed in.

Hate to pick on a seemingly good message but upon what standard is he applying his list of "good manners"? His own "good manners"? Someone may not speak the Queen's English but what does that have to do with loving Christ?

My point is what does having good manners, i.e. treating others well and with respect have to do with 'not talking the queens English'? Nothing that I can see. I think you've missed the point entirely.

I hope that one day you can break out of your self-imposed theological and spiritual restrictions and understand that Catholicism is Christian.

And the point I am making is that "treating others well" has nothing to do with salvation, in that by doing so one will be saved. If the jesuit believes that good manners will "get you into heaven", then upon what basis does he say so? what standard constitutes "good manners"?

And I certainly understand that if a person, regardless of the denomination or whatever, believes into Christ, then they are a Christian. Denomination has nothing to do with it. What I do point out though is that while a Catholic can be a believer, much of their practices have NOTHING to do with Christ. No one is saved by religious affiliation or by some weird philosophical rationalization-by-default.

Sorry that I like to ask these questions, but I like to challenge. I heard a saying once from a Christian and liked it: "towards unbelievers I act as a believer. Towards believers I act as an unbeliever".
