Copyright Question

Postby Ian on Fri Dec 11, 2009 4:24 am

Hey guys, quick question:

How do I properly attribute images where permission is granted under the following licenses?

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Templ ... 2.0,1.0/en

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:GFDL/en

Can I tuck the attribution/license away as a link (I'm thinking in terms of page format)?

This is me when it comes to lawspeak...

...so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks :)
Ian

I'm only a 2nd year law student, but I did take copyright.....

It looks like they are requesting you mirror their disclaimer by using the HTML listed on this page (I wouldn't simply do it in a link, not a true mark of any-sort); http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Templ ... .5,2.0,1.0

The symbols denote what you can/can't do with the work, ie if you make a derivative work you must still tack on the license.

Haven't read the links, and I'm not a lawer, but if it's creative commons then you don't usually have to attribute credit afaik, however, there's a big difference depending on what you're using it for: If you look on Flickr for images then you'll find some that are creative commons, but also 'free for commercial use' - you can't use a creative commons for commercial use if it is not listed as such, without paying, of course.

If it's a photograph then I'd want to put the photographer's name below it as a courtesy anyway. Kind of like 'Photography: Mr Smith'

Confused? You will be. ;D

Cheers, Gary.

Since this is a document for distribution, not a webpage, I'm guessing one would attribute images using foot notes or end notes, similar to what one would do with a typical academic paper?
