some of the observations are kind of funny. especially when he is really tripping.

for instance:

Patient tries to climb into activity box, and is generally agitated -- responds slowly to the suggestion he might like to draw some more. He has become largely non-verbal.

I think he genuinely did not care and waved them as a show of his lack of care in regards to waving ones own hands, yes. :D

a dear friend of mine (a theater director, now passed away) at one point in her career, did this kind of work. she told me she witnessed anais nain doing a similar experiment. for those who know anais nin's writings...:)
