My Favorite Jazz Tunes

Postby Steve James on Wed Dec 16, 2009 7:54 pm

The anniversary of "Kind of Blue" made me think of those jazz tunes that, for whatever reason, were special to me. Maybe you could share some too.

This one is Dizz doing a song written by Chano Pozo --who was an interesting character in his short life. Anyway, this song was the first to use (Cuban) poly-rhythm in this way. I wish I could find the original, with Chano. Oh well, this one is ok.

With influences from a different region, but related.

Yeah man, a lot of good stuff's been posted. Thanks to all. Anyway, I thought another transitional tune would be in order. Here's Dizz with another Cuban inspired work. It's right in between "swing" and "bop." It's big-band, but not danceable; so, the audience starts to change.

Wow, I found my step-dad's band on youtube --he's 3rd from right. He played with Fess Williams (bandleader/clarinetist) in the late 20s, early 30s. Their band was the first to play the Savoy. This music fits in a certain space. Williams was famous for his clarinet techniques, including circular breathing. It's unclear to me how, though I'm sure somebody knows, but his technique was influenced by Jewish klezmer. Obviously, it's also because the clarinet takes the lead. But, at this point it's a battle between that and trumpet. This is the kind of music you'd hear at a northern jook joint on Saturday night. It's different from what you'd hear in NO.
