26 gigapixels

The picture was made with the Canon 5D mark II and a 400mm-lens. It consists of 1.665 full format pictures with 21.4 megapixel, which was recorded by a photo-robot in 172 minutes. The converting of 102 GB raw data by a computer with a main memory cache of 48 GB and 16 processors took 94 hours. With a resolution of 297.500 x 87.500 pixel (26 gigapixel) the picture is the largest in the world. (stand December 2009)

(Tip -- instead of the keyboard arrows and +/- keys, use your mouse to move around and zoom in/out with the mouse wheel.)

BTW, I finally not only found Waldo, but also got his car's license place number:

Can you find him? :P ;D (j/k)

Very cool stuff.

Yeah, so you can imagine what technology like this could be used for :)

Yeah, but... I don't view it as some major technological feat. "They" (Michael will clarify ;D) were able to see the colors of our underwear from satellites many years ago.

This isn't about that at all... Just a hard-working guy (11 days just to stitch the shots together!) to come up with and implement a great idea -- world's largest photograph, with a nice interface. Free for everyone to see. I mean, there aren't even any banner ads on that site. That's classy. And cool as hell.

You're right. It's a great art piece using technology. I've been reading too many conspiracy threads.
