I'm with Mut...I was entertained the whole time, which is much more than I can say for most movies with more original scripts.

He never was strong on good stories.

This could also be titanic, adapted for sci-fi.

Went to see the Mark Walberg version of "Planet of the Apes" together with a several friends while all of us were on like maybe half a hit of acid. At the big finale explosion where the humans rig a space ship or something (I forget) to explode and it sends all the apes flying like if you put an M-80 into an anthill, my brother shouts out in the theatre in this real child like voice: WOW! DO IT AGAIN!

The entire theatre bust out in massive laughter.

It was the highlight of the whole film.

seriously though..."unobtanium"? really? That's such a human term.

Think about it, they spent so much money on it, it HAD to be made to cater to as many types of audiences as possible, in order to make profit.

Like I said before, it certainly ain't Martix (the first one)... But it's entertaining as hell, and boy did it ever make profit... It "is now the 10th highest grossing film in North America, and the film is heading into this weekend with a domestic gross of $380.5 million after picking up another $6 million Thursday."

I wonder how much of that gross includes the ridiculous extra charge for 3D, not to mention rising ticket prices. I am not sure that is has reached profitable yet. You may be right. But Cameron did pull it off with Titanic -- the #1 all-time box office earner... I still think Avatar will be moving up from that #10 spot and will do very well.

Movies inevitably make more money because the cost of going to the movies goes up. If tickets cost $2, then it'd be hard for a $500 million dollar film to make any money. However, not every movie that is touted as a blockbuster or costs a lot to make (like Speedracer) makes any money at all. So, although it might not be fair to compare box office receipts per se, compared to the other movies around, Avatar is kicking butt. Imo, what eventually matters is how many people go back to theaters to re-see the film. That's what will really add up.
