Punching on the retreat

Postby everything on Thu Dec 24, 2009 3:22 pm

Just watched this video of Melvin Manhoef KO'ing Mark Hunt while retreating:

Maybe the 3rd time I've seen a KO by the guy going backward (Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva come to mind but haven't seen a lot of combat sports matches). Q esp for the striking sport folks: how much time do you spend practicing striking or other techniques while going backward? 30%?

I went on a weekend retreat once. 8 hours a day of meditation, but no punching that I can remember.

Never say "Retreat", Graham, but rather "Advance to the rear!" ;D

one of my favorite films ever is: when we were kings. ali versus foreman match documentary.

a beautiful film.

as i remember: if you look at the turning point of that fight, it's basically repulse monkey. ali parries foreman's left with his right from the outside, while ali's retreating, then extends his right hand. bam.

i think i'm remembering the details more or less right. it's been a number of years. but i'd sure recommend the film...

Imo, there's a couple of things involved. First, right, like Repulse Monkey, the upper can be distinguished from the lower: the legs can move to the rear powered by the legs, yet the same waist power can be used in a forward direction (often diagonally). Boxers, too, do this all the time. They, like Doc said, "advance to the rear" by side-stepping. But, I think this question is also about physics. If the guy is moving toward your fist faster than your fist is moving away, it's the same as you stepping in and the other guy not moving his face. Timing, in those cases, is everything.
