resolution crisis!

Postby ashe on Sun Jan 03, 2010 12:43 pm

so my motherboard burnt up and i needed to replace both it and my CPU. initially i had installed a consumer copy of vista but couldn't get the product key to activate, so my wife stripped it out and then installed the OEM version of vista and got it activated.

after replacing the motherboard and installing the consumer copy of vista, our monitor was working correctly, but since reintstalling the OEM version our monitor will not display correctly. for instance it's only giving 1600x1200 as the option for max resolution when it should be 1680x1050. :-\

any suggestions?

ps, eff microshaft! i would switch to linux if it weren't for the very expensive software pack i own that won't run on linux.

have you tried going to the website of the manufacturer of the video card and downloading upgraded drivers for your motherboard? Or if it's a built in video chip on your motherboard you need to get it from the motherboard manufacturer's website - you can always call the shop you bought the computer from and let them know you just need the drivers - they usually already have all that stuff readily available.

if all else fails (and if it's a built in video chip) you can drop $50 on a new video card that slips into one of the slots on your motherboard and install the drivers with its CD

But... if you have a consumer version of Vista, isn't the upgrade to win 7 free? It was for me...

i think that some manufacturers were offering free upgrades if you bought a vista-equipped pc close to w7's rollout date (dell comes to mind). i had to buy my copy.

Ah, ok. Yeah, that's how mine worked (via Acer). Some random guy standing next to me at Staples told me Microsoft was giving it to everyone for free.

I thought you were talking about New Year's resolutions! Like, by January 3rd you'd already broken 'em all and were in crisis...
