I need a new hip

Postby Buddy on Sun Jan 03, 2010 4:01 pm

Fuck. Looks like it's been osteoarthritis all along. Sucks, I'm only 52 and it means 6 weeks out of work. Time to tighten the belt.

Sorry to hear that Buddy. Have you looked into various alternatives to surgery?

Thanks, fellas.
Almost everything Troy. I'm in pain and can't move like I used to. I've given it a lot of thought and there doesn't seem to be any alternative.

Sad to hear. FWIW my Mum is 60 and has had both her hips done in the last two years and she's doing excellently, she's half cyborg now I tell her.

Well, from what I understand, old-time Karate champs Bill "Superfoot" Wallace & Chuck Norris have both had DOUBLE hip replacements and were both operating nearly as well after as they had been before they had any troubles. Best of luck to ya Buddy. We'll be seein' ya doing the Van Damme splits between a couple of chairs in no time... ;)

Buddy
Good luck with the procedure. I had a total hip-replacement five years ago at age 52 and it wasn't a pleasant experience but it has been wonderful to be able to move again and be relatively pain free. I was able to start training again and working with my students in ways that hadn't been possible for several years before the operation.

Big limitation after the healing is over, in martial terms, is kicking with that leg or cardiovascular stuff like skipping rope and running-- as anything that jars the new socket will shorten its life-span. However, the nice thing about a hip-replacement is that the natural joint is relatively simple so the mechanical version also is simple; especially when compared to a knee replacement which often fails or wears prematurely because of the necessary range of motion.

P.S. Locally in Ottawa, most of the long-term instructors and practitioners that I know have struggled either with knee or hip problems as well as chronic pain in the lower back. There's often a bitter price to pay for all those injuries and/or the overtraining that you laugh off when in your 20s and early 30s.

Did you try the supplementation, in particular Hyaluronic Acid or similar?

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6607745.html

"Example 1
Oral Ingestion of Hyaluronic Acid By Patients Suffering From Osteoarthritis

A study involving sixty-seven patients suffering from osteoarthritis was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of oral ingestion of hyaluronic acid. Each patient received 1-4 mg of hyaluronic acid by oral ingestion administration 1 to 4 times a day over periods ranging from about 4 to about 2 weeks, during which period the patients' subjective pain feeling was reported. Twenty-nine patients (43.3%) reported no pain after oral ingestion of hyaluronic acid, and additionally reported increased range of motion. Twenty-four patients reported (35.8%) some degree of pain relief and some increased range of motion. Fourteen patients reported no change in the amount of pain they felt. "

Good luck with it. As noted, it is not uncommon, and seems relatively frequent among MArtists.

As a lesson to the rest of us, do you have any idea what caused the condition in the first place...?
