Can't defend yourself at home in UK???!

Found this article about Myleene Klass (the young lovely) getting a warning for waving a knife at intruders while she was at home alone with her daughter...

Myleene 'aghast' over knife warning
Sun 10 Jan 11:50 PM. By Press Association

Buzz Up!
Myleene Klass was said to be "aghast" and "bemused" after being warned by police for waving a knife at youths who entered her garden.
The TV star and Marks & Spencer model was in the kitchen with her daughter upstairs when she spotted the teenagers peering into her window just after midnight on Friday. She grabbed a knife and banged the windows before they ran away.
Hertfordshire Police officers warned Miss Klass she should not have used a knife to scare off the youths because carrying an "offensive weapon" - even in her own home - was illegal.
Her spokesman Jonathan Shalit said the former Hearsay singer was "utterly terrified" and was stepping up security at the property near Potters Bar.
He told the Sunday Telegraph: "Myleene was aghast when she was told that the law did not allow her to defend herself at home. All she did was scream loudly and wave the knife to try and frighten them off.
"She is not looking to be a vigilante, and has the utmost respect for the law, but when the police explained to her that even if you're at home alone and you have an intruder, you are not allowed to protect yourself, she was bemused."
Miss Klass' fiance Graham Quinn was away on business at the time of the scare.
It came amid calls for greater rights for people to defend themselves against intruders on their property.
A spokeswoman for Herts Police said no reference was made on the Klass incident report about a weapon.
She said: "We got a call at 12.45am on Friday to reports of the owner of the property hearing noises outside their address. Officers were in attendance and checked the property. There was no one around although they could see footprints in the snow. Words of advice were given in relation to ensuring suspicious behaviour is reported immediately."

Is that really the case in the UK? ???

Myleene should perhaps get some big, scary, drooling guard dogs instead... (or is that illegal, too?!)

Old news. Self-defense in the UK effectively illegal for many years, enforced somewhat sporadically.

What a totally fucked up country the UK is becoming.

I remember the days when one of my old rugby colleagues (a 6ft, 18 stone, prop forward) arrived home after an evening out with his wife to find a burgular in the downstairs living room of their home, he promptly turned to his wife and said "Honey call the police.....in 15 mins!" When the cops arrived the guy had tragically slipped down the first floor stairs and had broken his jaw. Cops apparently said "those stairs can be nasty!" and took the burglar away.

The UK is a neo-totalitarian, socialist police state where anything you want to do is forbidden since you might be a terrorist, pedophile, or swine flue carrier, you can't take pictures or protest in public, you can't own a gun or defend yourself—even within the confines of your own home—and the freedom to even breathe without taxation is being taken away at this very moment by Gordon Brown at his command, ie., carbon tax to be implemented in spite of failure to ratify Copenhagen treaty.

The US is just 3-4 years behind the UK implementation in most aspects, but they ain't getting our guns so it's nuts to them.

Fucked up real fucked up- same thing is trying to be put in place in the states always pushing to disarm the citizens....

Dogs are a good self defense thing true- but dogs are reportedly a problem in the UK now- chewing many people up according to the online news - no idea if it is true. Brit RSF guys will know.

"Myleene was aghast when she was told that the law did not allow her to defend herself at home".

You see if you can defend yourself against criminal goons Myleene, you might get the idea that you can defend yourself against political goons and that--- would not be good...

Realize its 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other...

one time in london some yob was entering my apartment through the window. I chased him away with a kitchen knife, he panicked and cut his hand on the broken glass in the process. 'CSI' took a DNA sample and caught him within 48 hours :)

as far as I'm concerned, if yobs and chavs have 6" blades, you should use 12" blades. and if they trespass on your property or break into your home, you should have the right to nick them with something pointy, or at the very least scare them away.

I have always enjoyed my stays in the UK (unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to visit of late) - love the environs and love the food! Things are a bit too expensive, though...

The most high-profile home defence case in the UK was farmer Tony Martin who shot and killed a teenager who had broken into his farm in 1999.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Martin_(farmer)

Nobody in the UK can have guns (without various licences etc...) .... except farmers (although in this case Martin had an illegal pump action weapon). They also can be a bit trigger happy. My wife remembers, as a young girl a farmer shooting over their heads because they were walking on his field - being shot at by farmers used to be 'not unusual' in the UK. These days I guess if they did that there would be a SWAT team and black helicopters circling over their farm within minutes!

That chap was shot in the back by Tony Martin as he was trying to escape if I remember correctly.

Original story, bit sceptical about the original news report, since it's basically light weight celebrity news and there was no official verification or otherwise of her story. She might have just been given a polite warning about sticking knives in kids without good reason, who knows?

So Michael, we're a "neo-totalitarian, socialist police state" (I'd agree except for the socialist bit) but the only difference between you and us is that you're all running around with firearms?

People in glasshouses shouldn't throw stones.

OK the BBC is on the story

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8451369.stm

A statement from Hertfordshire police said: "Officers spoke to reassure the home owner, talked through security and gave advice in relation to the importance of reporting suspicious activity immediately to allow officers to act appropriately."

It added: "For clarification, at no point were any official warnings or words of advice given to the home owner in relation to the use of a knife or offensive weapon in their home."

Move along, nothing to see here...
