8-PRENYLNARINGENIN is the phytoestrogen in hops... It is almost completely metabolised into other, non estrogenic substances by the liver: http://dmd.aspetjournals.org/content/32/2/272.abstract ... you will have to do your own homework on the metabolites, it would take dozens of pages here. Furthermore, there is not one study- repeat- not one, that has proven a link in any case. (Try and find one) Nor with soy for that matter. What has been proven is that the individuals genes and general level of health determine the reaction to exogenous oestrogenic compunds, rather than the compounds themselves.

....and you might want to rethink your stance on the prostate issue... It turns out that xanthohumol, another substance found in hops, is one of the most powerful anti-prostate cancer substances as thus found yet... http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/285909
Just sayin'... ;)

That was an interesting post. How do you know so much about this?

Don't want to be a spoil sport but that study was done on female mice.

In vitro means in a test tube or petri dish.

That article says that xanthohumol blocks testosterone, which would actually be worse than ingesting estrogen. :-\

I hate to have to look through articles to find stuff. Quotes are much more user friendly. The contradictory povs on the last statement forced me to follow the link to the article. Anyway, here's the quote fwiw:
Found in hops, the molecule called xanthohumol blocks the excessive action of testosterone and estrogen, making it an effective agent against prostate and breast cancer. It also helps to prevent the release of a protein called PSA which can spark the spread of prostate cancer.
While scientists have known that hops can block the production of estrogen, these findings are the first time that they've found proof that it can also block testosterone. Clarissa Gerhauser of the Heidelberg Institute told the Mail Online that, "Research is still early but in trials we hope to further demonstrate that xanthohumol actively prevents prostate cancer development."

Steve,

RE: The mice-
That's how oestrogenic properties are tested in the lab. Female uteri (is that right?) respond to the presence of estrogens far more clearly than other tissues from either males or females.

"In vitro" tests involving human liver cells are extremely common as well as reliable.

The article citing testosterone blocking action is journalistic, not academic. I cannot find a free copy of the lab study online. I can get a reference to the written articles next time I get over to the medical library. They are in German, however. That may be a while, as I am expecting my son to be born any minute.... Anyways, the action of dihydrotestosterone is what is blocked by xanthohumol. DHT is the form of testosterone that stimulates carcinogenesis in prostate cells. It's what causes baldness too. It is actually a metabolite of Testosterone. Xanthohumol binds to receptors that DHT would otherwise fill, thus blocking DHT's effect. Xanthohumol also inhibits the action of aromatase, which has a tendency to convert testosterone into estrogen, which is considered to be a result of "excessive" testosterone activity. So, in blocking DHT, and inhibiting aromatase, is the context of "blockage" the journalstic article refers to...

This topic is getting very technical and scientific, i never even learned the periodic table at school. I guess at the end of the day if you dont like beer and you find it makes you act more emotional and gain weight in the wrong places then it aint for you. If you do enjoy a pint and find it beneficial to your well being then happy days :) Every human body is different in its own way, we react differently and our body's cope with external influence in different ways. Physics and chemistry teaches us that there are many variables to take into account, bagua teaches a similar thing although it learns to adapt. Food ( Beer ) for thought.

I think you guys all must have gotten toy lab. sets at Christmas back when you were rug rats... ;D

also think Bittburger - is a damn fine mass produced pilsner I say- goes good with sticky rice and Thai Barbeque gai! Thailand has great food, bleh beer, Germany has good beer bleh food.

That's the puzzle If your country has good food- bad beer vice versa.... must be a karmic law of the universe. Maybe the Budvar Cz people should set up a brewery in bangkok- they would make millions!

"Man this Bitburger is good! " Khun Pornthip more gai- khrup khun krup!" ;D

So have you had any good beer lately???

Thailand has bad beer for sure, the rum is ok, but Thais aint fussy, a beer Singh and some random chicken parts usually do the trick. I drank Heineken whilst i stayed there and ate well :), its a sort of compromise. In Philippines any quality larger will cost you much more than the average Filipino is prepared to spend, so they don't serve them. Fortunately San Miguel Pale Pilsen is not half bad and comes in at about 25 pence a bottle. Given a choice Krombacher will sort the men from the boys, and if all else fails grab a few pints of Stella and fight your friends :)
