Olympic closing ceremony

Postby meeks on Sun Feb 28, 2010 10:03 pm

one of the TV announcers said it right:

If ever there was a Las Vegas performance about Canada based on every possible Canadian stereotype, this would be it. Beavers, moose, canoes, and police in their dress uniforms....

I think it's as if an American choreographed the ceremony:

and beavers...! there's gotta be beavers! I want canoes! Canadians all have canoes!

*sigh*
"The power of Christ compels you!" *spank*
now with ADDED SMOOTHOSITY! ;D

Wish I'd seen it now. No polar bears?

well, this is how the rest of the world views us. I mean, of those who haven't actually come to visit us that is.

Did you know that only some 17% of the USA has a passport! That says a lot about world view and how to serve it.

So if all anyone wants to pay for is mounties, lumberjacks, canoes, indians, red serge wearing mounties and yes, beavers, then so be it. Any thing else would probably be deemed existential and unwatchable! lol

Sorry Teo, I've heard that having a canoe is a great privilege that only natural-born citizens enjoy... so I'm sort of in the same boat (or canoe) as you in that sense, in the US, where I could never even hope of becoming a president... :'(

As for the rest of it -- you know, after having visited Montreal several times, I have to say that all of the above is true. I once saw a couple of polar bears who were beaver-hunting in their canoe getting pulled over by a mountie riding a moose alongside the river bank. You see that sort of thing all the time over there. Very amusing! If you're planning to visit -- bring your kids too, they'll love it.

Man, somebody flash up the Kids in the Hall skit where some crusty Frenchies out of a Jack London novel (I'm thinking Batard), or perhaps a retro Hudson Bay Co. ad campaign, go hunting for business formal attired middle managers from their canoe as they paddle it along, inside an office building and down the aisles of rows and rows of cubicles, grabbing pinstripe single-breasted like beaver pelts like they were on the headwaters of the Great Slave Lake. Super classic!

The bob-sled competition was enough of a closing ceremony for me.
