Or, if you subscribe to the suggestion theory, the Japanese guy was not responding to earlier "chinese" cues and suggestion that might cause him to lose. When he attacked, he demonstrated to the Chinese guy what he expected a qi attack to look like. The chinese then adopted that as a suggestion, and was able to have his suggestion succeed.
As for Japanese orientalism, of course its possible. In Japan, magic comes from China. In China it comes from Persia. (And don't forget, Japanese do not consider themselves Asian.)
