Out on the streets.

Postby shawnsegler on Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:10 am

So, after staying with my follks for the past couple years we finally had the mother of all arguments and they've asked me to be elsewhere even though I have no job and no place to stay (well, a couple couches to surf but not sure how long that's going to last).

Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know what's up. I probably won't be posting much for the forseeable future...I'ma have to pawn my computer.

I can still be reached at [email protected] and I'll continue to recieve mail at 8118 sw 10th ave portland OR 97219.

Much love,

Damn. Sorry to hear that Segs. I went through something similar back in '02 when I first moved to Oakland. The cousins I'd been staying with while looking for a job just kicked me to the curb. And I didn't know ANYONE out here. I spent a week sleeping on the streets of Oakland. I hope you at least have enough couches to sleep on til you find something else. Hang in there bro... :-\

Hey Shawn,
I hope things will take a turn for the better for you.

One crazy idea I got, was that you could join a monastery for some time. You recently suggested this to become mandatory for adolescents. It's none of my business to make such suggestions, but it came to my mind and I wanted to mention it.

Shawn, are you having a hard time finding a job in the city where you currently live? If so I would move to where the economy is better, and find a job there - any job - so that you can get back on your feet. I have a friend who moves around a lot, he's divorced and willing to go anywhere for work - he has used roommates dot com (I think that's the site) to find a place to stay short term when he gets to a new city, then when things stabilize at the new gig he'll sign a lease to rent an apartment. He's sort of an I.T. "ronin", just wanders across the country working wherever. Anyway, just some food for thought. Things are not bad here in San Antonio, and I guess we're better off than most of the country because I see out-of-state license plates EVERYWHERE here; it has become a game with my kids when we're out and about to spot them: Alaska, Nebraska, California, Florida (lots of the last two), and so on.
Also, I have another friend who once had 11 jobs in 18 months, he said the best place he worked during that streak was CostCo, apparently they treat their employees pretty well. Maybe you should try getting on at one of those, they are all over the country. Just a suggestion.
Best of luck to you.

Sorry to hear that, Shawn... Perhaps call your folks, apologize and let them know how you feel (fights can get heated, people say things they don't really think, etc.), but I guess you may be on couches for a while... Finding jobs in such a situation isn't easy, I hope you can go back so that it is easier to get on your feet from there.
