Question about Claire Hooton's form

Postby lenmccoy on Mon Apr 12, 2010 5:00 pm

I have a wonderful DVD called called "The Method Tai Chi Beginner's Level". It is very clear and detailed and about as close as I would come to recomending a swlf study video. Claire Hooton the discs author refers to her form as that of Dr. Cheng ManChing and indeed about the first thirteen moves are an excellent presentation of Cheng ManChing's 37 posture short form. The way she moves, pivoting on the heel, facing fully forward in single whip, keeping her rear leg flexed in bow stance etc is very much the Cheng Manching style not classical Yang style. After stepforward parry punch however she does something odd. She does find needle at the bottom of sea followed by spread arms like a fan. These moves aren't even in Cheng Manching's short form as far as my limited understanding goes(although they are in classical Yang style).
Does anyone out there know:
Is there more than one Cheng ManChing short Form?
or Did Claire Hooton invent this on her own?
Does anyone know why Cheng ManChing deleted these movements in the first place? At least by my very limited understanding the bending forward of needle at the bottom of the sea is supposed to be very helpful for the kidneys. Respectfully,
Len McCoy

this is the william chen 60 movement form.
almost all of chengs students have a longer version of his form adding the moves he deleated.
we have one that goes on the end of chengs form adding another 18 moves.
da liu had a nice version threading the extra moves through chengs form.
there was a nice version i learnt from taiwan with the moves after fair lady.
and there is a book by an english student of chengs, who looks a lot like william chen, doing another version.
i was told he left out the more agressive moves to emphasise a softer approach.
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

She's certainly a beautiful woman, that's all I can say about this... :) :-X

One thing I would suggest to Len, FWIW, is to not look at choreography/sequence of movements so much, but worry more about HOW they are practiced.

Good luck with your training...

In the first pick, it loks like she is about to strangle herself. The other one, I have no idea what she is doing. Maybe it should be lying down, because that is what she would try to to if she got a rapist on top of her.

Fair enough, although whoever she is, she really shouldn't be on the cover demonstrating tai chi postures IMHO.
Perhaps Ms. Hooton should have used herself on the cover, or used a different cover style?
But anyway, that's just an opinion, and we all know what those are like...

Bill knows his 'fully instructional' tai chi tapes!! -bow-

There's a whole untapped market out there guys... 'Nude Xingyiquan' or 'Nude Bajiquan' could be a hell of lot of fun.

Here's an even better company/website idea: http://www.nudewushu.com
The entire spectrum of CMA in the nude.
Come on guys. It's not even a registered domain!! It's a goldmine I tell ya.

Look, to be honest, I don't want beef curtains staring at me while some chick does the "swallow" posture... Oh wait... maybe..... ;D

if I'm looking at beef curtains while she's doing swallow, then I can only hope that she weighs somewhere around 100 lbs so I can keep the curtains in my face til shes done swallowing. ;D

heh heh, this thread is curtains now!

oh shit, this is a class!!! don't worry it's in a private setting. Guess they're not just in the park then, something a bit different from the average nude tennis game

Well just had a closer look:
Why Naked
1.Why Not
2.Total Awareness of your body,,when standing or moving naked in the sun or a breeze, even swimming in the nude, the feeling, the body, becomes alive, one has a heightened awareness
3. Many postorial mistakes that inhibit the flow of chi ,and become bad habbits are hidden under clothing
4.Feel closer to nature

I'm sold
