But if he absolutely wrecks Chael Sonnen then I'm going to start to believe I'm right. The only flaw in my theory is the Patrick Cote fight. But if you look at his run in the UFC, he has completely annihalted every oppoenent that wasn't Cote or an American. As for his skills, he choked out Dan Henderson, who is one of my all time favourites and one tough bastard. So, as far as I'm concerned he can do it (finish just about anybody). He chooses not to, not sure why. I think if he fights Vitor he'll KO him too.

PS. For my money I thought Arona won that fight!

I have heard this elsewhere and you may be on to something.

I can understand the reason he ran the last 3 rounds as well from a strategic view. However in the UFC you are encouraged to be aggressive and that is one of the judging criteria, in an even fight the more aggressive opponent will win according to the rules. Machida was laying waste to the LHW division and Dana pretty much told him that he had to be more aggressive and start finishing fights if he wanted a title shot.

As much as I think that MMA should be done as a sport for sports sake and think Silvas performance was strategically good, I also think that it was bad for Silva. Dana said that if it happens again he will cut Silva from the UFC. At the same time you are in a ring to fight and beat your opponent. IMO letting them run around for longer than necessary is risky, and if you have the skill to easily finish someone, then you should finish them.

Don't know why I mentioned that except to say that part of it was due to Mir's attitude before the fight. I think that humility is a positive character trait, but for many people, like me, it's more of a personality trait. Bowing to an opponent before and after a match isn't an indication of character. Yet, I think it's a stretch to expect good character from fighters.

I don't and won't demand that Silva be anything other than himself. It won't change my regard for the man's skills one way or the other. I might not like how he acted in the ring, on that night, but he is really just a television personality to me. As for Ali, the context was entirely different. Even when he was hated, he stood for something. He gave up his career for his beliefs; now, that is character. Though he pretended to disrespect many of his opponents, it was precisely the opposite outside the game. As for his boxing, though, Ali was almost always chased by big punchers. He often threw jabs while going backwards. Hitting and not getting hit, some people say, is the science of boxing. However, one thing about Ali, he also Always gave his opponents a chance to hit him in the final rounds. He'd stand for a while and trade. Anyway, that's not to defend Silva --something I'm not really fit to do :) It's only to say that if a guy can't catch him and khtfo, that's just too bad for the viewers.

Finally, sometimes things like this turn into opportunities for greatness; not because of the public disgust, but because it makes something real to the person. I truly agree that it's not enough to be technically great, and that being "good" is much better. However, I don't believe in judging a person until his or her life is over. Or, that's what I've learned after doing stupid stuff, myself.

8-)

good stuff.

Couldn't bear to watch the whole thing, but thoughts from first two rounds:
(1) Maia was ridiculously outclassed. Silva gave him the chance for the grapple when he went down on a knee, but Maiai did not go for the tackle. Why not?
(2) Silva dropped his hands, leaned in, gave him every chance to take the bait. Why not?
(2) Silva was doing the work and landing the shots (well, doing what little work there was)

Broader question: Should a champion:
(1) Do what is necessary to win and hold the belt?
(2) Put on a great show for the fans each and every time?

I also hold White responsible for this ridiculous mismatch. Miaia basically got Maoshan-ed: He had no game, he had nothing to bring.

OTOH, fight fans have a lot to thank White for:
(1) He took the UFC and from virtually nowhere made it the premier MMA event with sponsorship, distribution, money and sponsorships for fighters, etc.
(2) MMA is now getting mainstream press coverage and is entering the mainstream, as opposed to being a bloodfest. A lot of this has to do with White's PR efforts.
(3) Pride is dead in the water; Strike Force I cannot get out here; etc, etc. As far as the non-specialist MMA superfan is concerned, UFC IS today's MMA

But if I were White, I'd drop Maia, not Silva I'd give a stern talking to my people who make match-ups. Silva vs GSP would be a fight, not a joke, so why White is allegedly refusing this, I have no idea.
