Just in case you ask who The Question is:

Maybe the mask is a membrane filtering our atmosphere to whatever gases they breath while filtering germs, therefore saving them from a "War of the Worlds" fate. It may also provide them with sensory input wired to their nerves using an advanced, unknown and alien technology. Maybe it works underwater too.

Or they are a new Ninja prototype hired by the MPAA, to crack down on the pirate infestation.

The mystery remains.
