Re: Tim Cartmell's Standing Grappling, Escapes & Counters DVD

The following typical threads that plague martial arts sites will get moved here if not just deleted: 1 - My style is better than Your style" - 2 - "Internal & External" - 3 - Personal attacks - 4 - Threads that start well, but degenerate into a spiral of nonsense.

WOW!!! :o

What a lot of piss is spouted here!
I can't see the clip due to China! But I think Mr C. has always produced good DVDs etc. in the past and would expect this to be more of the same.

The only think for me, and this isn't a comment about Tim per se, more of a comment on the general idea that, "typically a street fight will go quickly from striking range to clinching range to the ground"...i have heard this over and over again from many sides and frankly i think this is folly, or rather something that has been more common since the rise of BJJ...coincidence?

Any street fight (as recently as Boxing Day...so apt) i have been in i have made dam sure i never get taken to the ground, or if i am then i bounce back up ASAP. For the simple and obvious reason that you don't know how many people will get involved or if there will be weapons. On your feet you can at least run away!

Best tactic is to put people straight down and VERY F*CKING HARD! The closest to ground grappling in a street fight should be a hefty knee drop in the solar plexus which should stop that person so your ready for the next. Interestingly i work with a former South African Special Forces guy (army boxer and 4 dan judo) who not infrequently gets into scuffles here, and he never and i mean never recommends going to ground. Straight down and hard so at least they have the wind knocked out of them.

I do BJJ and I openly admit that what I do and use in class is something I'll probably never use in the street.

I do BJJ because I like it, plain and simple.

Just to clarify I wasn't knocking BJJ. It is something i may do when i get back to Scotland it is as useful as any other martial art in a fight...even dare i say it taiji! It was the idea that street fights typically go to ground which is today taken as gospel!

1. Push to chest, followed by striking to the head.
2. A swinging punch to the head.
3. A front clothing grab, followed by punch to the head.
4. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a head butt.
5. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a knee to the groin.
6. A bottle, glass, or ashtray to the head.
7. A lashing kick to groin/lower legs.
8. A broken bottle/glass jabbed to face.
9. A slash with knife, most commonly a 3 to 4" lock blade knife or kitchen utility knife.
10. A grappling style head lock.

Don't know how up to date these figures are, or how wide the survey was, but they fit in with my experience. I suspect ashtrays (smoking ban) and glassings (plastic glasses) are not so common now

Hey Rob, thanks for posting this.

It's not a knock it's reality.

In sambo they divide things up between sport and combat.

I think it's an important distinction.

In BJJ I heard a purple saying (after rolling gi-less), "Yeah I'll have to keep that in mind...that if I get into a street fight my favorite half guard sweep doesn't work so well without a gi." :D

I didn't start this thread, the administrators did. But I DID start a new topic on the main forum that addresses the spinelessness and incompetence of RSFs administrators. How long will they let it stay up? How long before the unethical little fucks bar me?

Gosh, isn't it interesting how spineless administrators edit a longer thread, move the controversial stuff to another forum, and post it under someone else's name as the author - in fact, MY name? RSF has now officially sunk to the level of the current Empty Flower - just more empty.

Chris, you Son of a BITCH! :-*

Now, could you please pull an administrator away from his gay porn and ask him to respond?

kshurika,

I'd just like to say that your behaviour does your teacher no favours. If my teacher got wind that I was using his good name to pimp my online ego like this then I think he would be very disappointed with me.

Matthew.

If your fighting more than one person then your screwed on the ground.

Watch that door hitting your behind on the way out, then... ::)

A guy walks into a bar, has a few conversations, gets into an argument with someone about his favorite football team, and then proceeds to yell at everyone at the place, calls it a dump, and specifically insults the bartender and the bouncers... What, in your yoga-enlightened opinion, should happen next?
