Re: Tim Cartmell's Standing Grappling, Escapes & Counters DVD

The following typical threads that plague martial arts sites will get moved here if not just deleted: 1 - My style is better than Your style" - 2 - "Internal & External" - 3 - Personal attacks - 4 - Threads that start well, but degenerate into a spiral of nonsense.

Well, at least one person caught the sarcasm. Enjoy the DVD.

I repeat, though, that parking lot can be very realistic. First taker gets a complimentary chipotle beef sandwich from Togo's next door. I'll have it blended to a fine consistency so that it can be administered via tubes through your nostrils, once the hemorrhaging has been cleared by the EMTs.

This thread (and all Tim Cartmell threads) are hilarious. No one is attacking your liege.

I've had this for some time and it's content is first rate, for me. I found the techniques and drills to be excellent and couldn't have asked for more.. I didn't find the actual content geared toward sportfighting at all, the opposite actually. I'd also find it quite easy to transfer the training outside to the pavement in a mankini if I so desired - which I 100% do not I might add.

I would suggest however for those wanting to continue biting and gouging their way out of full nelsons on the glass infested concrete: this is absolutely, most definitely not for you.

Happy (and safe) training to all.

As usual, 2/3 or so of the posters are responding to just keywords in the responses rather than to actual comments being presented.

Have all of Tim's students here been replaced by googlebots?

Do in the US. people really use headlocks and full nelsons etc. in street fights? Here its more !pushing!, haymakers, falling to the ground, grab a beer cup and smash it over head, throw things, many against few...
If so, is it because grappling and wrestling is more embedded in your culture (WWE, High school wrestling etc)?

Ask a certain moderator here how "training for real on the street" in Systema worked out for his back! Just because someone demonstrates on mats does not mean it is not applicable on the street.

Simple fact: 95% of naysayers here would shit their pants in a "real" fight.
Fact: Majority of naysayers on this thread cannot do 10 pullups, yet they train for "reals"

Talk is cheap girls. Tim has always, and always will, have an open mat policy for anyone who would like to experience just how inefficient his thoughts, theories, applications, abilities etc. are. I am sure after signing a waiver any of the boys would be willing to go outside on the street to quench that thirst for reality for you all. PLEASE, please please tape it and put it up so us "googlebots" can be made out the fools all want us to be!

For all the talk here at RSF about "reality" and "street fights" I never, ever, see anyone put vid up! Shooter runs his mouth every chance he gets about how he is the first to do CMA in MMA way back in the day. Yet I never see this (must have been before video was created)! Why? Where is it?

I look forward to seeing all these street fights you guys have been in!
Cheers

There is definitely the influence of WWE and High school wrestling. It's kind of a part of our culture of fighting but all the fights I've seen start the same - pushing, haymakers, then when they get the advantage going for the chokes, or the buddy, bouncer, or concerned citizen will use a choke or nelson (allowing the other guy several free punches to the face) before he is also held by someone else. The thing is though is that a person doing the choke hold (headlock) instinctively starts back peddling and taking the chokee backwards. I saw my friend choked out by a bouncer in a matter of seconds. The bouncer got him in the choke and said "Say goodnight motherfucker!" and he was out like a light. They carried him out and laid him on the sidewalk. ;D

Point being - not a lot of time or room to maneuver in my experiences.

A bouncer put me in a full nelson but I just went totally limp and then crawled across the dance floor but going limp when someone has your neck doesn't always work, depends on weights and strengths. But it's usually about all I've ever had time to do.

Good thread though. ;)

We did a workshop about 5 years ago on the "top ten UK street attacks" according to police figures. AFAIR the list was

1. Push to chest, followed by striking to the head.
2. A swinging punch to the head.
3. A front clothing grab, followed by punch to the head.
4. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a head butt.
5. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a knee to the groin.
6. A bottle, glass, or ashtray to the head.
7. A lashing kick to groin/lower legs.
8. A broken bottle/glass jabbed to face.
9. A slash with knife, most commonly a 3 to 4" lock blade knife or kitchen utility knife.
10. A grappling style head lock.

Don't know how up to date these figures are, or how wide the survey was, but they fit in with my experience. I suspect ashtrays (smoking ban) and glassings (plastic glasses) are not so common now
