I've been wasting my time!

The following typical threads that plague martial arts sites will get moved here if not just deleted: 1 - My style is better than Your style" - 2 - "Internal & External" - 3 - Personal attacks - 4 - Threads that start well, but degenerate into a spiral of nonsense.

I've been wasting my time!

And all this while I thought you needed to touch people to fight them. Wow...I'm so dumb.

I define internal martial art as unusual muscle recruitment and leave it at that. If my definition is incomplete, at least it is correct so far as it goes.

Looks like these folks are already 'touched', mentally, if you know what I mean! ::)

I like this style better.

And hey, it teaches you to overcome a bigger and stronger opponent!

That second one is definitely my daughter's style, always casually flinging Harry Potter spells at me.

How?

And more importantly why?

No! Of course not, silly. ::)

You HAVE to have a good cheese ball wind-up first. ;D

better than most of the wand fights that go on between adult men involved in martial arts.

seriously... it's impressive if you use sword fingers, not a palm....

I was jazzed that I could do the candle trick, when 14 or 15 years old, with the frontal fist. If a candle ever attacks me, I know just what to do. I'll put its light out. I don't see this as a useful demonstration...for what does it prove?

Never tried it with sword fingers. Will try it at the next power outage. The wind effect (which does the job) will be similar to the fist; see the area rule of air drag.

it's not about drag so much as the shockwave in front of your hand. and it's much harder to accumulate a substantial shockwave with sword fingers than a fist or palm. It's about the surface area in the front. a flat or concave surface like at the front of your fist/palm would accumulate a larger pressure difference at the front. That higher pressure zone, once your fist stops, is what creates a "wind" in front of your hand. For sword fingers, the pressure would build more at the palm/thumb/rear fingers than at the tip of your index/middle fingers, and the resulting wind will be much weaker once it reaches the front of your sword fingers. Likewise, this trick would also be difficult with a knife hand strike, but this would still be easier than sword fingers.
