When you strike - you don't really strike so a block or parry is not needed.

You seem to be making the assumption that the side step and escape is a given
and that the focus of training is on the bear paw strike or the strikes in general.
I am pretty sure I could get the take down on the shoot with her every time
in those situations while taking minimal damage from the strikes.
