Ok, would it be fair to cast Olivia Munn or Maggie Q? I don't think GITS has cult status in Hollywood. One problem is that anime and manga adaptations to film should be done by the people who produced them. However, I think that great stories work whoever the characters are, even if they aren't like the originals. GITS and Death Note, for ex., have really complicated plot lines that can't simply be transposed or shortened. Afa the white washing, it is kind of sad when an Asian character is played by a non-Asian, especially if the film takes place in Asia and the character's family is all Asian. But, hey, it's about the dollars, and SJ is a hot commodity, and they hope that people who never heard of GITS will go see the movie because of her.

this is especially so if you have lots of special effects and CGI
GITS was made to the tune of 110 million.

From the movie exec point of view, it is completely logical to
cast someone popular and bankable (to get finance) for the lead.
Cast an Asian and be true to the original?

Well, yeah, all heroes are like Greek mythology. But, why should there be Asians on Tatooine? Star Wars is mythological too. Remember there was a time when the only Asians on space ships were in Japanese movies and on Star Trek Imo, your argument has more validity when it comes to history, but afa fictional characters, I don't really care.
