Moy Lin Shin.

Founder of the taoist tai chi society.

He died at age 67 about 10 years ago.

anyone have experiences with this group?

what do you think of their tai chi? It looks like a cross of several styles.

anyone a member? what are your experiences?

I used to study TCM with a guy who was an instructor for Moy Lin Shin's Daoist Tai Chi. From what he told me they place a heavy emphasis on the health aspects, many of their students being from the elderly community. Their long form has 108 postures and is apparently a modification of a Yang Form, Yang Chen fu version I think. My friend told me emphasis in the form was on extending/opening the spine through extension of the hands and having a strong and flexible kua. One exercise I remember him showing me involved standing in a horse type stance, extending the hands out to the front(palms down) then squatting down into the hips, on the way up the hands turn over, palms facing the sky. He told me during a seminar one guy did 500 of these over the course of the afternoon!

They also practise a small Liu He Ba Fa form as part of their syllabus.

Best,

Luke

One of the three times I saw my first teacher get really flustered was talking to these people at a local do / demo. They had an extremely snobby attitude, for very little reason. The "secret" form was Yang 108 with over-extended joints, tied in with a nice little pyramid scheme

see, the arm in the front is there to keep you from landing with your face when you fall over in that stance.

ah that makes sense. and the thumb sticking out is meant to break so you don't hurt the rest of your body when you fall.

yes, i realize that they do not use tai chi as martial art.

I am curioss as to how many have experience with the society.

They're a bit controlling from what I've heard of the local group. Not exactly cultish, but the word 'cult' does eventually enter the conversation. Not sure if that's true of the organization as a whole or just the local group. But if people like it and wanna do it, power to 'em.

No personal experience, but 99% of what I heard from others about them (from various localities) was negative.
(It could be a personal preference thing though, i.e. I end up hanging out more with the type of people who don't like what they do, so... FWIW)

Last time I checked it was in the golden triangle area near downtown.
