We do have this saying in Tongbei - "if the student is inclined to be merciful, they should not practice Tongbei." Interestingly, however, just a few lines after this is another saying which, to paraphrase, suggests that one should not look immediately to strike the temples, base of the ears, or back of the head, because you could kill your opponent by doing so. In other words, the line about not being merciful doesn't mean that it's anything goes, all the time. My own teacher often emphasizes that in challenge matches such as these, the rule is "dian dao wei zhi" - just a touch is enough for the two parties to know whose skill is better. Qualities such as "fast," "cruel," "poisonous," etc. are emphasized in the songs in terms of one's attitude in a real struggle, but you don't have to become a sociopath to practice Tongbei
