Liang Shouyu story (is it true?)

Liang Shouyu story (is it true?)

Postby mixjourneyman on Tue Mar 02, 2010 8:52 am

I read on the youtube comments page somewhere that Liang Shouyu once killed three armed red guards with an umbrella.
Anyone know if this story is true?

probably not, but it makes for a good legend framework around the guy.
Coconuts. Bananas. Mangos. Rice. Beans. Water. It's good.

I wouldn't put too much faith into YouTube comments, of all things...

Short answer: no.
You could try asking meeks for his take on LSY's grandiose claims, but he may be getting sick of hearing about it. ;)

Yeah but weren't the red guards like all 12-year-old kids. ;D

No, that's small red soldiers (Hong Xiao Bing). When you're in middle school you can join the Red Guards (Hong Wei Bing), and in high school Communist Youth League, and after that your final destination - Communist Party.

During cultural revolution, you and your whole family would be tortured and killed if you killed a red guard (nothing is too good for the class enemy. And as the saying goes, when you weed, you should leave nothing behind). I don't know where Liang Shouyu lived, but if he lived in a major city like Beijing, he would not have gotten away with it. China has 4, 5 times U.S. population, living in Beijing was like giving in Times Square during rush hour, all the time.

When I was living there we would on occasion hear about murders, and they're invariably solved because there's no way you can get rid of a body, or commit the crime without anyone see or hear anything about it. In China neighbors are not like what we have here, everyone knows everyone's business. So even they didn't see you do it, they know you had problems, they know your whereabouts during various time of the day... I don't think they do it now, but it used to be when they investigate a murder, it's not just the police investigating. If someone at your work is killed, your whole organization goes into detective mode, everyone contribute what they know to solve the crime. It's very effective (and scary of course).

As I remember the story (told by Ian Sinclair) it happened while he was travelling in the countryside. But I heard it a long time ago so I could be wrong.

Nowadays they have something called Human Flesh Search in China so I'm not surprised if they still make crime hunting a big communal effort over there.
