One can experience the need to relax in doing a split and the intensity thereof.

I'll try again, is it a stretch if it's not relaxed?

It is similar to do passive stance, as you can use the weight of your torso to press downward.

WD, you may want to examine some of the wushu practitioners when they get older. They may have good flexibility but may have issues on holding the whole body together. Drifting have treated some of those patients, and may have some good reference for you. But, he is overwhelmed with works and life nowadays. Within relaxation there is tightness, and within tightness there is relaxation. As Drake said, one should be able to go from 1 to 10, and return to 1. When one pushed the muscle inward and rebound outward, one could have been done when pushing inward in crossing hand. We don't do it in ZZ training.

So, much like horse, any stretch can be relaxed but any relax is not always a stretch.

The translation of Song鬆 as relaxed is misleading as it also means let go or let loose. Relaxation is a mental status rather than a muscular action or partial muscular action which required certain level of control. The art of manipulating various levels of intensities with different muscles is the name of the game.

So I understand that the principal teaching device is the form, with particular emphasis on stepping, and pushing to refine sensitivity.. are there any other two person training devices, anything other than pushing? Is there anything to cover the gap between pushing and free sparring? I'm picturing an shen pao (? the xyq two man form thing) type of training?

The first form in the 66 forms is stop cart [to] ask way with the hidden technique of toss stone [to] ask way. After the upper arm block and strike the opponent immediately in expressing the meaning of one touch strengthen lets go as in the 5 Character Song. I consider this form as the signature form of Liuhebafa similar to catch the peacock’s tail in Taijiquan. The scenario is simply with an opponent deliver a powerful right punch to your head and you block with your right hand on the blind side and strike immediately with your right hand to his or her face. This is also applicable from the inside and with the left hand, etc. There is a lot one can do with the other arm and the form sort of suggested to presses down the opponent’s attacking arm to make room for a strike. This single movement of the arm involved confrontation, neutralization, and retaliation.

Pretty much why I stay quiet. What I have to say won't make sense without a visual, and I don't do that. When I was younger I would travel. Currently that's problematic. <<shrug>>

If you don't know what I am talking about, video will not help. It is easy to block a strike but there is a difference in the reaction time after blocking and retaliate between using brute force and otherwise. So, I think you need to experience it yourself. I am not sure how to produce such video. so any suggestion is welcome.
