According to senior officials, the suspect flew from Anchorage, Alaska to Fort Lauderdale via Minneapolis. He boarded the plane in Alaska last night. He only checked one bag -- a hard case carrying his gun, Anchorage Airport Police told ABC News. TSA regulations allow guns to be checked into baggage if they are stored in a locked, hard-sided container that cannot be easily accessed.

Are those recruitment videos specifically encourage airports or something?
“They then retrieve articles at final stop. Protocol wasn't followed but as was stated in some newspaper articles, instruction were followed whereas the loading took place when fellow landed. The whole story lack follow up due to stuff that is left out purposely, or media just did not know the regulations/guidelines.
Facts are that the fellow was a mental case allegedly under observation but he seemed as if he would have done the act, regardless of airport, bus station or other facility”
Ammunition
Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).
Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm.

There is no prohibition in the state codes against also carrying ammunition within the same motor vehicle or compartment in the vehicle, as long as the firearms are not loaded and ammunition is not attached in any manner to the firearm. - Penal Code Sections 12025, 12026,
I just moved across country and got to know many of the state laws. They all seemed to be different, which was insanely annoying.
